Specialised Fire Risk Assessments for the Hospitality Industry

Prioritising Guest and Staff Safety in Hospitality Settings

Addressing the Unique Fire Safety Requirements of the Hospitality Sector

The hospitality industry, encompassing hotels, restaurants, and leisure facilities, presents unique fire safety challenges. From busy kitchens to densely occupied guest rooms, our assessments are designed to mitigate risks in these diverse environments, ensuring the safety of guests and staff alike.

The Critical Role of Fire Risk Assessments in Hospitality

In hospitality settings, identifying and managing fire risks is crucial. This involves addressing potential hazards in guest rooms, kitchens, and public areas. Regular fire risk assessments are key to ensuring the safety of guests and complying with safety regulations.

Understanding Legal Compliance in Hospitality Fire Safety

Under the UK’s Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, hospitality operators are obliged to ensure fire safety on their premises. This includes conducting comprehensive fire risk assessments, implementing necessary safety measures, and maintaining an ongoing review process to protect both guests and staff.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Fire Risk Assessments in Hospitality

Our process for assessing fire risks in hospitality settings includes:

  • Identifying Potential Hazards: Locating fire risks in various areas, from guest rooms to kitchens and event spaces.
  • Evaluating Risks: Assessing the probability and potential impact of a fire, especially in high-risk areas.
  • Recommending Safety Measures: Advising on appropriate fire detection and fighting equipment where necessary.
  • Emergency Planning: Provide emergency plan template for you to utilise for your premises.
  • Staff Training and Preparedness: Ensuring staff are adequately trained in fire safety and emergency procedures.
  • Regular Review: Continuously updating the fire risk assessment to reflect changes in the premises or operational practices.

Tailoring Safety Measures for the Hospitality Industry

We advise on safety measures that are essential for hospitality settings, such as:

  1. Comprehensive Fire Detection Systems: Installation of advanced fire detection systems in all areas, including guest rooms and kitchens.
  2. Clear Escape Routes: Designing and maintaining clear, well-marked escape routes for guests and staff.
  3. Fire Safety Equipment: Strategically placing fire extinguishers and other safety equipment for easy access.
  4. Staff Training: Regular training for all employees in fire safety protocols and evacuation procedures.
  5. Fire Drills: Conducting regular fire drills to ensure staff and, where possible, guests are familiar with evacuation procedures.
  6. Emergency Information for Guests: Providing guests with clear information on evacuation routes and fire safety procedures.

Empowering Hospitality Staff with Fire Safety Training

Training hospitality staff in fire safety is vital. They should be equipped to handle emergencies effectively and guide guests to safety. Regular training sessions, drills, and updates on fire safety protocols ensure that staff remain prepared and confident in their roles in maintaining safety.

Keeping Fire Risk Assessments Up-to-Date in Hospitality

For the hospitality sector, updating fire risk assessments regularly is essential. This ongoing process adapts to changes in building layouts, guest capacity, and operational practices, ensuring continuous safety for guests and staff.

Hospitality Industry FAQs

Is a fire risk assessment a legal requirement for hospitality businesses?

Yes. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales, any hospitality premises where staff are employed or members of the public have access must have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment in place. This covers hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, event venues, and leisure facilities. The responsible person is legally accountable for ensuring it is carried out by a competent person with relevant experience.

Premises in Scotland and Northern Ireland are subject to separate but equivalent fire safety legislation.

Who is responsible for fire safety in a hotel or restaurant?

The responsible person is whoever holds the greatest degree of control over the premises. In a privately owned business this is typically the owner or manager. In leased premises, responsibility is usually split between the landlord, who covers shared areas, and the tenant, who covers their own operational space. In larger hospitality groups, fire safety duties may be delegated to a nominated individual, but legal accountability remains with the person in control.

What are the most common fire hazards in hotels and restaurants?

Commercial kitchens are among the highest-risk areas in any hospitality premises, with grease build-up in extraction systems and deep fat fryers presenting a significant hazard. Other frequently identified risks include sleeping accommodation where guests are unfamiliar with the building layout, high-occupancy public spaces that complicate evacuation planning, and obstructed or poorly signed escape routes. Temporary structures such as marquees and outdoor event spaces also carry underestimated risk and require their own assessment.

How often does a hospitality fire risk assessment need to be renewed?

There is no fixed statutory interval, but the assessment must remain valid and reflect the current state of the premises. A new fire risk assessment is typically needed following a significant change to the building or layout, a change in the scale of operations, a fire incident, or a change in management. For higher-risk premises our assessor will usually recommend a new assessment annually. Where a premises is well managed, a biennial assessment with an internal management review in the intervening year may be advised.

Do hospitality staff need fire safety training?

Hospitality staff must be adequately trained in fire safety procedures, including how to respond during an evacuation and how to assist guests to safety. As part of the assessment, we review whether training is being undertaken and properly logged and whether drills are taking place at an appropriate frequency. Where gaps are identified the report will include specific recommendations. If your premises requires formal fire warden training, we can help with that separately.

How much does a hospitality fire risk assessment cost?

The cost depends on the size of the premises, the number of floors, and the complexity of the layout. A small independent restaurant will be priced differently to a large hotel with multiple function rooms and sleeping accommodation. We provide transparent, fixed-fee quotes with no hidden charges.

Who can carry out a fire risk assessment for a hospitality premises?

The assessment must be carried out by a competent person with relevant experience in fire safety. We hold BAFE certification, are audited by SSAIB, and are members of the Fire Protection Association. We recommend using an assessor with demonstrable experience in hospitality environments, given the specific risks associated with commercial kitchens, sleeping accommodation, and high-occupancy public spaces.

They carried out a fire risk assessment for us. The report arrived inside the quoted window, and it is detailed and readable, with a separate summary of just the actions that made it straightforward to work through. We raised queries and each one came back answered the next day with an amended report. When we asked exactly what had been covered on site, we got that in writing too. Very open and transparent, and explained all of our responsibilities clearly. Easy to deal with throughout. Highly recommended.

The Assessor was a very pleasant chap. He explained what he was doing as he went along and pointed out any issues with my FRA folders and discussed the solutions. I was really happy with the outcome of my assessment and the friendly nature of how the assessment was conducted

Organised fire risk assessments across multiple facilities. All fire inspectors were professional and brought a wealth of experience, enabling them to provide practical solutions to ensure compliance. Frequent calls with the office-based team were a pleasure; the office staff were always pleasant, helpful, and courteous, and greatly aided the organisation process from beginning to end.

The assessor really knew her stuff and was friendly, but professional. However this is a converted house with four flats and I feel that the resulting paperwork was complicated and very wordy. The freeholders manage the building themselves so perhaps should have engaged a company that could also do the necessary work. If you are a larger block/ company I would recommend them. This review originally appeared on Trust pilot and I had a reply saying that the report section summarises the information, that is of course correct, however, it could do with being in a better format for printing.
